"Knight Thoughts" - exclusive web content
The only thing more delightful than seeing the camptacular Showgirls again is seeing it in a theatre with a packed audience of
fellow Nomi Malone enthusiasts. Hence,
Showgirls Gone Wild, a special presentation (complete with pre-show) of the Camp
Midnight film series at Chicago's Music Box Theatre on Saturday, August 23rd.  My alter ego Dick O'Day (enthusiastically
photoshopped above) will MC the event. Make your reservations now!
Camp Nirvana:
Showgirls
8-15-08 "Knight Thoughts" web exclusive review
By Richard Knight, Jr.
From the moment Showgirls debuted in 1995 it was an unintentional instant camp classic.  The furor that greeted this rank Joe
Ezterhas scripted, Paul Verhoeven directed turkey is hard to fathom.  Who could take this piece of sublime junk seriously?  The last
in a long line of filmed variations on a theme (
Stage Door, All About Eve, Valley Of The Dolls), this kill or be killed look at the “glittery”
world of Vegas showgirls introduced the stunningly incompetent Elizabeth Berkley to the screen.  The lips and teeth of Berkley as
Nomi Malone and Gina Gershon as her rival are mesmerizing – the horse-faced Berkley appears a dead ringer for Mr. Ed while
Gershon has the slash grin of Jack Nicholson’s Joker in
Batman.  Won’t it be painful when they kiss, I wondered, assuming that the
lesbian undertow would eventually have a pay off?  When it does – it’s like watching a dental porn flick.  The deep, dishy pleasures
afforded while watching a cinematic car crash like this are not to be lightly dismissed and I roared with derisive laughter from
beginning to end.  With
Kyle MacLachlan and a typical B-movie supporting cast.
