Two holiday themed movies for the 2008 season demonstrate the best and the worst the oft used subject has to offer

Four Christmases-A Christmas Tale

The Vince Vaughn-Reese Witherspoon picture, Four Christmases, is one of the worst holiday films in years while the Catherine
Deneuve vehicle
A Christmas Tale is one of the most sublime.  The two films, centered on the holiday theme, show up the good
and bad possibilities in this overworked theme and also highlight the difference between the tastes of American and French film
audiences.  Or do they?  Guess who comes out looking like the Bad Santas?  Are American audiences really so finicky and fixated
with toilet humor that they won't sit still for the funny/tragic/contemplative group portrayed in the Deneuve picture?  This is what I've
been pondering since the two films opened recently.

I'll have more thoughts about this shortly...maybe even before the holidays are over!  In the meantime, go see
A Christmas Tale and
avoid
Four Christmases.

On second thought - I think I've said it all!
