Brokeback Mountain: Instant Milestone in Mainstream Cinema
Even though I'm not angry that Brokeback Mountain didn't win the Best Picture Oscar (I contend that Capote deserved the illustrious honor), it's still an instant classic. It just happened to have the misfortune to be released in a year of particularly strong films. This Tuesday, April 4th the DVD finally arrives in stores and at last everybody -- especially those in the hinterlands -- will have the chance to find out for themselves what all the fuss has been about.
Those who haven't had the chance to see it will hopefully recognize instantly that, indeed, all that MUCH ADO has been ABOUT SOMETHING.
The disc includes several featurettes, including a Making Of and a close up on Ang Lee. There are no deleted scenes (which will disappoint fans who were hoping for more of the romance between Jake and Ennis). I'm also surprised that there isn't a feature length commentary but suspect that a Special Edition will follow in short order. The Widescreen Edition, considering the spectacular scenery, is a must.
For a little behind the scenes info either before, after or during your screening of the film, here are my interviews with two of the film's principals:
