Mainstream Movie Pleasures

The most financially success movie of all time is out on DVD as are three other movies with appeal to
mainstream audiences - all on tap for this edition of DVD Recommendations.
Daybreakers (Lionsgate)  A really cool little B-movie and a nice addition to the vampire film canon.
The movie's central conceit - that the vampires are the abiding population and the humans the
endangered species - is a delicious one.  Ethan Hawke, Sam Neil and Willem Dafoe (who adds a
neat, often hilarious cameo as a wild eyed vampire hunter) enact this nifty little action thriller -
complete with ghoulish SFX and a gleaming look that owes more than a nod to Gattaca, the futuristic
sci-fi thriller Hawke made with Uma Thurman (and that's definitely one to put on the list of Must
Sees).

Avatar  (Fox)  It's here!  It's blue!  And it doesn't look half bad in 2-D!  Though I still think the
movie falters after the dazzling first half, this is clearly a Must Have for the collection (no special
features - that will come in a deluxe edition most likely with bonus footage, etc. at some point).

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus  (Sony)  Including this in a line-up of mainstream movies
is my little in-joke - but only halfway.  But I do think Terry Gilliam's latest wildly inventive, eye
popping fantasy film (Heath Ledger's final movie) will be enjoyed by audiences who give it a chance
(it's a tad slow and a tad thin in the story department).  Naturally, seeing Ledger's final work adds an
undertow of sadness that adds gravitas to the movie which is a genuine pleasure for those with a
taste for the offbeat and will make a nice surprise for those who give it a chance.  And the addition of
Jude Law and Johnny Depp certainly helps give it mainstream audience cred.

Edge of Darkness  (Warner Home Video)  Mel Gibson returns to the Cineplex in a role and with a
movie that made him an 80s action star.  There's violence galore in this story of a cop turned
vigilante when his daughter is murdered in front of his eyes.  For those looking for a meaty action
thriller, as I noted in
my review, this is a good bet.
